Invitation letter to 08-09 squad

Dear Fencer

As one of Britain’s top cadet fencers you have been selected to join the Cadet Potential Programme. 6 cadets from each of the 6 weapons will be included, 36 in total. The age group is cadet for the 09 european & world championships (i.e. born in 92 or later).

This list is being taken from the 07-08 1st March world championship selection ranking.

This scheme has 3 main aims:

1.            To improve the general physical fitness of the squad up to the standards established by British Fencing’s Strength and Conditioning team.

2.            To bring the standard of fencing footwork up towards the level of the best in the world.

3.            To provide support and recognition for the personal coaches in order to make the most of their skills and contributions, now and for the future.

There will be a Programme Manager in overall charge (Neil Brown), appointed by British Fencing. The manager will work with the lead Strength and Conditioning coach (Phil Marshall) and the footwork coaches (Norman Golding, Maciej Wojtkowiak) to ensure that in future British cadets and juniors will be well prepared for the world stage.

If you wish to be part of this squad, you will be expected to attend all the assessment sessions, which will allow the coaches to identify your needs and set up a suitable training programme for you. You will be required to follow your individual programme and your progress will be assessed at each follow-up session.

We will expect the fencers accepting the invitation to join this scheme to do the following:-

  • Attend the training & testing weekends. Competing in world cup events or travelling to international training camps are reasonable excuses, competing in non-selection domestic events or “too much work” are not reasonable excuses.
  • Keep in regular contact with the management team (Neil Brown, Phil Marshall & weapon coaches.
  • Fencers will need to carry out their prescribed training programmes, maintain training diaries & report their progress, results & any problems or injuries. Full details of the records the fencers must keep will be explained at the first training weekend.
  • Show commitment to making the scheme a success.

You will also be expected to provide feedback to the coaches and the programme manager in various forms such as a training diary or by email. Any feedback you provide will be confidential and not disclosed to anyone else without your permission.

The funding for the programme is limited but we expect to cover some of your costs for the testing & training sessions. The details of this will be: some travel expenses (15p a mile) for those living more than 50 miles from the venue, hotel accommodation for those who need it at £25 a night. Last year we also managed to pay some expenses to coaches for attending the testing & training & for CPD.

The first weekend will be 29-30 March at KES in Stratford, the next will be 5-6 July in Chepstow.

Further assessments every few months to fit in with the competition timetable as much as possible. Please note there will be an open invitation for all the fencers’ coaches to attend every session.

British Fencing believes that you have the potential to be a future ‘world beater’. We expect you to engage and work hard; in return we aim to provide you with access to expert support and training.

We expect you to show a good level of determination to succeed & some long-term ambition. This programme will prepare you for good quality training in the years ahead but it is your willingness to keep going that will determine your future success.

It should be noted that national or international rankings do not automatically entitle athletes to a place on this programme.

In offering you this opportunity, we recognise that it might not be possible for every athlete in the top 6 of the rankings to adhere to the requirements of the programme, (attending training, completing training logs etc). In these situations and after discussion with the athlete, we will replace those who are not able to comply. In these cases there will be no effect on selection for international events.

Please contact me to discuss further if necessary.

If you would like to accept this invitation, please complete the form and return it to me as soon as possible (signed / scanned and emailed is fine).

                                                                                                            Neil Brown
