Invitation letter to 09-10 squad – 42 fencers

Dear Fencer

Please note that the Cadet Potential Programme will not be continuing in its present form. Please read the following article for some ideas about the National Academy that will form the basis of the national squad in future.  http://www.britishfencing.com/British_Fencing.asp?PageID=1467

As one of Britain’s top cadet fencers you have been selected to attend a Cadet Potential Programme testing & training weekend on the 4-5 July 09 in Stratford. 6 cadets from each of the 6 weapons will be included, 36 in total. The age group is cadet for the 2010 European & World championships (i.e. born in 93 or later). We have also taken as step to addressing the relative age effect by inviting the next fencer on the ranking list born in the 2nd half of the year. See the South West region web site at www.southwestfencing.net for some data on the relative age effect. Details of a fencing case study are here.

This selection list is being taken from the 08-09 1st March world championship selection ranking. All full list of the invited fencers is at the end of this document.

You are very likely to be involved with any replacement programme so please fill & return the forms even if you can’t make the first weekend.

The Cadet Potential scheme was started with 3 main aims:

1.             To improve the general physical fitness of the squad up to the standards established by British Fencing’s Strength and Conditioning team.

2.             To bring the standard of fencing footwork up towards the level of the best in the world.

3.             To provide support and recognition for the personal coaches in order to make the most of their skills and contributions, now and for the future.

For this weekend in July the Programme Manager (Neil Brown), will work with the lead Strength and Conditioning coach (Phil Marshall) to ensure fencers get the best information to shape their training efforts over the Summer.

This testing & training weekend will introduce some of you to the tests British Fencing performance team are using, & for some of you will allow you to continue to monitor your progress & consult with Phil Marshall.

If you wish to be part of this squad, you will be expected to attend assessment sessions (or to perform the tests in your club), which will allow the coaches to identify your needs and set up suitable training programmes for you. Its reasonable you then follow your individual programme so your progress can then be assessed at any follow-up session.

We will expect the fencers accepting the invitation to join this scheme to do the following:-

As you’ve seen the initial testing & training weekend will be 4-5 July at KES in Stratford, there will also be an opportunity to learn & perform all the fitness tests at other training events, e.g. during the Millfield training camp in August. Please note there will be an open invitation for all the fencers’ coaches to attend every session.

We expect you to show a good level of determination to succeed & some long-term ambition. This programme will prepare you for good quality training in the years ahead but it is your willingness to keep going that will determine your future success.

It should be noted that national or international rankings do not automatically entitle athletes to a place on this programme.

In offering you this opportunity, we recognise that it might not be possible for every athlete in the top 6 of the rankings to adhere to the requirements of the programme, (attending training, completing training logs etc). In these situations and after discussion with the athlete, we will replace those who are not able to comply. In these cases there will be no effect on selection for international events.

Please contact me to discuss further if necessary.

Please note there will be a small cost for the July training weekend to cover some travel expenses for the staff. There is no central funding from British Fencing for this.

If you would like to accept this invitation, please complete the 1-line spreadsheet on the CPP page at www.fencingcoach.net, you can download this file here. Please complete all the relevant fields, rename the file as CPP0910info_Firstname_LASTNAME.xls (using your own name, so if you are Valentina Vezzali the file will be called   BCPP0910info_Valentina_VEZZALI.xls), & send to me as an attachment at neil.brown@britishfencing.com. Use only one row for your data & don’t add any more columns.

Please also complete the first relevant pages of the pre-assessment form available on the CPP page at www.fencingcoach.net & here.

Personal coaches

The real success of the whole scheme depends on the cooperation of the personal coaches of the fencers. As such there is an open invitation to the coach of every fencer to attend all the training weekends. Part of the long-term plan will be the training of the coaches who have the drive & the energy to produce the top British fencers. As a fencer on this scheme it may be up to you to communicate with your coach about the training you will be doing. Of course we (Phil Marshall & I) will always be available to answer queries or help with problems.

Coaches who attend the training & testing weekends should, by Sunday, be competent to administer all the fitness & footwork tests we will be doing.

Fencers should also encourage their coach to travel to international events with them if they don’t already do so.

Parents

Clearly this is a scheme aimed at fencers who are U17 therefore the fencers all rely on their parents for financial & logistical support. British Fencing are planning a meeting for parents at the beginning of the season, watch this space for details.

Communication

As far as possible communication will be online. You can call or text my mobile any time between 8am & 10pm. I have now created a CPP group on Facebook, . There is a CPP web page on a link from www.fencingcoach.net & from the British Fencing web site.

For email notification of each change to the information about this scheme you should subscribe to the Cadet Potential Programme thread at www.fencingforum.com, make sure you have “Instant Email Notification” selected as the Default Thread Subscription Mode on the Edit Options tab in the User CP. If you don’t know what all this means ASK.
