We will be returning on Monday 5th Nov on the 16:00 (approx. TBC) ferry from Calais.

Please make sure you are being met at one of the above points. We may be able to catch an earlier ferry so you must be prepared to be met earlier. We will be able to phone as soon as we have checked in for the ferry. (My mobile will obviously be reachable during the return trip.) You can work out from the outward trip schedule what time to meet for the return journey.

You will need to bring:

·        Your passport

  • Your British Fencing or equivalent licence (You may need to give this to me as soon as we arrive at the sports hall in the morning, put it in your fencing bag now.)
  • Money for food (you will need to pay for 2 evening meals in Germany & Belgium {Friday & Sunday} & you will need to eat during the day on Saturday & Sunday.) As I have done in previous years all the fencers will be able to buy food in the sports centre & I will pay at the end of the day, this is included in the officials cost you have paid.
  • An EHIC card (apply at www.ehic.org.uk or call 0845 606 2030)
  • If you take any medication on the WADA list of banned substances (asthma inhalers are the most common) you will need to have a TUE certificate before you travel to this event. Please see the details at: http://www.britishfencing.com/Guide%20to%20TUEs%203.10.05.doc
  • Your fencing kit: (all fencers need FIE equipment {800N jacket, breeches, & plastron, 1600N mask, S2000 blades}). Your lame {mask, jacket, overlay/glove} must be in good condition; you should have 3 sabres & 3 body wires. U12 fencers are not fencing electric but do need FIE equipment (or 350N jacket & breeches with 800N underplastron) & need size 0 blades. There are no restrictions on blade size for U14 fencers. Ask your coach if you are unsure about any of your equipment. Make sure all your kit is clearly marked.

Hotel & evening meals.

Many of you (fencers & parents) are travelling separately from the main group. If I am booking accommodation for you, please make sure you have sent me a cheque for the correct amount BEFORE we travel (most of you already have). I do not want to have to collect cheques while I am there. Cheques must be payable to “Cadet Sabre” & the costs are detailed in the original invitation & on the reply spreadsheet.

We organise a buffet meal on Saturday evening for all the fencers & as many others as would like. Please tell me in advance if you want to join the team meal on the Saturday evening & check the Kenten replies spreadsheet.

The up-to-date list of travel, hotel, & evening meals I am booking is online on the cadet info page at www.fencingcoach.net. Please check this to make sure I have all the correct information. I have separated: coach travel, hotel for each night, & evening meal. If you (fencers or parent) are travelling & are not on this list I am not planning to book your hotel rooms or evening meal. Let me know at once if there are any errors.

The hotel room allocation is now up, please check this & if you’re not happy with any of it tell me before we travel so I can make changes (once we’re at the hotel it will be too late). All fencers & adults I am booking hotel rooms for have rooms allocated. If you are travelling separately to the main group you must share according to the plan to avoid any confusion.

If you are staying in or around Koln on the Sunday night or flying back on Sunday you must make your own hotel & travel arrangements.

This year there are a large number of fencers travelling independently; because of this we are using a smaller coach. This means there may be no transport available from the hotel to the competition on Saturday & Sunday mornings. You must make sure you have arranged transport to the event before you travel, don’t assume there will be space on the bus.

The competition is at:-

Sporthalle am Gutenberg-Gymnasium

50126 Bergheim

Saturday         Men’s sabre A-Jgd. U17 (born 91-95)                     8:15

                        Women’s sabre B-Jgd. U13 (born 95)                   13:15

Sunday           Women’s sabre U17 (born 91-95)                            8:30

                        Men’s sabre B-Jgd. U14 (born 94)             10:15

British fencers travelling independently please try & arrive an hour before check-in.

As most of you will know there is a weapon control, if you are not travelling on the bus you should get your kit controlled as soon as you arrive (last year again several fencers forgot this instruction, please make sure you don’t do this.)

Individual fencers do not need to check in, I will do all the admin but I may need your licence. If you are travelling independently make sure you tell me when you arrive.

A list of the fencers & officials travelling on this trip is with this letter. Female officials are Beth Davidson, Vicky Garrity & Jenna Ashton, their mobile numbers should you need are 07834884194 (Beth), 07753236681 (Vicky), & 07___ ______  (Jenna).

Please remember you have signed a code of conduct governing your behaviour over the whole weekend. Please reread it if you have forgotten what you have signed. If you have lost it please let me know & I’ll let you have another one.

There will be a very large group of fencers, parents, & officials at this event. To keep all under control it is vital I know where everyone is at all times, please do not leave the venue at any time without telling me (this applies to adults as well as fencers.) Last year several fencers (again!) left the venue to travel home without telling any of the officials, please do not do this even if your parents are with you.

Having a group this size also means there should be fencers or adults supporting at the side of the piste whenever a British fencer is on. This means if you are not fencing you should be looking for other British fencers to support, you are travelling as part of the British squad so we expect this from all fencers & adults.

If there are any disputes with referees, coaches or other fencers please come & get me or another of the officials if I am busy, if you can’t find me & it’s urgent (probably will be) call my phone, I’ll have it with me & switched on all day during the fencing.

If you are an adult accompanying this trip remember you are there for the benefit of the fencers. If you are not sure what to do ask me, one of the officials, or your child’s coach. There is a guide for parents & fencers on the cadet information page at www.fencingcoach.net, please read it all carefully. Don’t ask questions about how repechage works unless you have read & understood the information I have provided. Make sure you understand the implications & the rules of a possible dope control (this applies to any major fencing event). Please also not the requirement to have a TUE certificate if required.

The officials in charge of the trip (Neil Brown [leader], Dennis Hunt, Peter Wright, Peter Rome, Daren Tee, Julian Rose, Jenna Ashton, Murray Morrison, Beth Davidson, Vicky Garrity, Mike Garrity) are there for you, the fencer’s, benefit - if you want help/advice/support you must not be afraid to ask. The coaches are there to help with warming up, please ask if you want a warm up lesson before you fence (if your personal coach is not there you should do this.)

Nominated international events

As most of you will have seen from reading the forum & the list of nominated events on the cadet page of www.fencingcoach.net there will be 4 nominated international cadet events this season. They are: Godollo, Kenten, Pisa & Camden. Fencers can count their best 3 results towards national rankings. Please make sure you keep an eye on www.fencingforum.com for the details of these events.

BYC byes

Fencers who are travelling to this event & have a regional BYC qualifying event on the same weekend can claim a bye to the final IF they are in the top 25 of the national rankings. This must be done by me & it’s essential to enter the regional qualifying event.

Contact me (preferably by email) if you have any questions.       Neil Brown
