Final check-in times are as follows:-

WS      10:15

British fencers travelling independently please try & arrive 45 minutes before check-in.

Individual fencers do not need to check in, I will do all the admin but I will probably need your licence.

You will need to bring:

·       Your passport

  • Your British Fencing or equivalent licence (You may need to give this to me as soon as we arrive at the sports hall in the morning, put it in your fencing bag now.)
  • Money for food (you will need to pay for food etc. while we are travelling, this includes an evening meal on the Sunday evening). As I have done in previous years all the fencers will be able to buy food in the sports centre & I will pay at the end of the day, this is included in the officials cost you have paid.
  • A mobile phone that will work in France & it’s charger.
  • An EHIC card (apply at www.ehic.org.uk or call 0845 606 2030)
  • Your fencing kit: (all fencers need 350N equipment). Your lame {mask, jacket, overlay/glove} must be in good condition; ideally you should have 3 sabres & 3 body wires. Ask your coach if you are unsure about any of your equipment.
  • A refillable water bottle. Don’t rely on being able to buy sports drinks etc. at the venue. You can drink the tap water.

95700 Roissy en France

Tel: (+33)1/34293434

Fax: (+33)1/34293419

The up-to-date list of travel, hotel, & evening meals I am booking is online on the “Moneteau  replies” spreadsheet on the cadet info page at www.fencingcoach.net. Please check this to make sure I have all the correct information. I have separated: travel, hotel for each night, & evening meal. If you (fencers or parent) are travelling & are not on this list I am not planning to book your hotel rooms or evening meal. Let me know at once if there are any errors.

The hotel room allocations will be up soon, please check this & if you’re not happy with any of it tell me before we travel so I can make changes (once we’re at the hotel it will be too late). Everyone I am booking hotel rooms for has rooms allocated.

A list of the fencers & officials travelling on this trip is on the spreadsheet. Female official is Pat Aiyenuro, her mobile number should you need it is 07786 064836.

Please remember you have signed a code of conduct governing your behaviour over the whole weekend. Please reread it if you have forgotten what you have signed. If you have lost it please let me know & I’ll let you have another one.

There will be a large group of fencers, parents, & officials at this event. To keep all under control it is vital I know where everyone is at all times, fencers, please do not leave the venue without telling me. Last year several fencers (again!) left the venue to travel home without telling any of the officials, please do not do this even if your parents are with you.

Having a group this size also means there should be fencers or adults supporting at the side of the piste whenever a British fencer is on. This means if you are not fencing you should be looking for other British fencers to support, you are travelling as part of the British squad so we expect this from all fencers & adults.

If there are any disputes with referees, coaches or other fencers please come & get me or another of the officials if I am busy, if you can’t find me & it’s urgent (probably will be) call my phone, I’ll have it with me & switched on all day during the fencing.

If you are an adult accompanying this trip remember you are there for the benefit of the fencers. If you are not sure what to do ask me, one of the officials, or your child’s coach. There is a guide for parents & fencers on the cadet information page at www.fencingcoach.net, please read it all carefully. Make sure you understand the implications & the rules of a possible dope control (this applies to any major fencing event, however there will be no testing at this event.)

Please also read the leaflet produced by the Youth Sport Trust at http://www.youthsporttrust.org/downloads/cms/jae/YST_Performance_Parent_final.pdf

The officials in charge of the trip are there for you, the fencer’s, benefit - if you want help/advice/support you must not be afraid to ask. The coaches are there to help with warming up, please ask if you want a warm up lesson before you fence (if your personal coach is not there you should do this.)

Contact me (preferably by email) if you have any questions.  Neil Brown

Original invitation letter for information only.

Monéteau U15 - 18th January 2009

Minime Men’s Sabre & Women’s Sabre

Friday, 16 January 2009

Please read all of this letter carefully, especially the code of conduct & trip information from British Fencing. Please make sure you (& your parents) sign where necessary.

This letter is your invitation to go as part of the British U15 squad to Moneteau (near Auxerre) in France. It is going out only to the top 30 U15 fencers (on the selection rankings or the general rankings) so if you are invited you should make every effort to go. This event is open to fencers born 94-97. If you haven’t been before it is an ideal introduction to International fencing & a competition where several British fencers have done very well. You can always find the up-to-date rankings at www.sabrerankings.com.)

Congratulations for the competition results that have put you in a position to be selected.

As you will know there are 2 cadet ranking lists; the development ranking list (used for selecting fencers for international events & seeding some age group competitions) & the British team selection ranking list (used for selecting for international events including the European & World Championships, & seeding nominated cadet events).

The top 25 cadets on either list are invited to all the International cadet events.

For email notification of each change to the information about this event you should subscribe to the Moneteau thread at www.fencingforum.com, make sure you have “Instant Email Notification” selected as the Default Thread Subscription Mode on the Edit Options tab in the User CP. If you don’t know what all this means ASK.

If you have not seen the list of selection events & the sabre-specific information on the cadet information page at www.fencingcoach.net you should read it as soon as you can. You & your parents should also have read the “information for fencers & parents” document on the same page.

For Moneteau this season we will travel out in a coach on Saturday 17th & back the day after the competition (Monday). This year we will again start our return journey on the Sunday evening to allow for some shopping time in Calais. Full details of times & travel arrangements will be given nearer the time. We will have an early start from Gordano services on the M5 & the coach will travel to Dover via M5, M4, M25.

As usual we will take a large enough group of officials to supervise & coach/advise the fencers during the competition, supervise the hotel & generally look after the fencers. Obviously we will have male & female officials & all will have been CRB checked.

There is always an invitation for the coach of any invited fencer to accompany the national squad trips to international events. This will be at his or her own expense & they must accept my authority at all times. Fencers, please encourage your coach to accompany you on these trips; bear in mind you (your parents) may need to contribute towards their expenses.

Any adult accompanying one of the trips, i.e. travelling with the fencers & staying in the same hotel, must have CRB clearance from British Fencing or a suitable authority, e.g. a school. Please make sure the British Fencing office has your disclosure number. You will need to be a British Fencing member for this.

If any parents or coaches are planning to travel please let me know. It is generally a good idea for the fencers to get used to travelling & staying independently & to be part of the National squad. These trips should not be a holiday for fencers, the aim is to get the best possible results in the events & to gain experience for future years & trips. This doesn’t mean they’re not fun of course.

If you are expecting me to book any hotel accommodation or meal with the team on the Saturday evening you must: tell me as soon as possible, send a cheque for the correct amount, check you are on the list with what you expect on the reply details spreadsheet on the cadet pages of www.fencingcoach.net. Most of you have done all this with no problem in the past, some have found it a bit difficult…

You will not need FIE equipment for this event, you need 350N jacket, breeches, plastron, 1600N mask, S2000 blades. Your lame jacket, overlay, & mask must be in good condition. You should have 3 sabres & at least one spare body wire. There are no restrictions on blade sizes. (If you do not understand any of this paragraph ask your coach, do not ignore it & hope no-one will notice.) All your kit must be clearly marked with your name. Did you all read this bit, your kit must be clearly marked?

If you would like to go please fill in the form below & send it to me with a cheque for £260 payable to “Cadet Sabre” by the 30th December. It is very important that you send your money in on time. (Obviously a small number of fencers will get this information late, please email me with your intention as soon as you can.)

You can check I have received your reply & cheque on the cadet information page of www.fencingcoach.net (click on “Moneteau replies 08-09” to see the spreadsheet), tell me at once if any of the details are not correct.

Behaviour

The foreign trips that we organise are not mini holidays. They are serious excursions to an elite level of competition. As such we expect fencers in the squad (regardless of age) to take the event seriously. We expect fencers to do everything in their power to get the best result possible. This includes getting a good night’s sleep before the event, eating and drinking sensibly in preparation for the event, presenting with all their kit in good working order, warming up sensibly before the event and again before each round as appropriate.

Fencers must remember that they represent Great Britain, as well as themselves, their Coach and their families. Unruly conduct is not acceptable.

As the FIE Rules for competitions say: by taking part in a competition, you pledge your honour to observe the regulations, obey orders, abide by the decisions of the Referees, be respectful and behave in an orderly, courteous and sporting manner.

Confrontations on the piste are always unpleasant. Remember that there is a proper procedure laid down in the rules in the event of a dispute with Referees or organisers. Remember as a member of British Fencing you agree to abide by all rules & regulations.

Attached are a code of conduct and a table of sanctions. Please read these thoroughly, sign the code of conduct, get your parents to counter sign it and return it along with your application for this trip.

Dope Testing

Dope testing may take place at competitions at home or abroad. Do not take any medicine in the fortnight leading up to a competition, without first checking that it is allowed. The Sports Council has produced a handy quick reference guide, the size of a credit card, which the British Fencing can supply if you send a stamped addressed envelope with your request. In any doubt refer to the British Fencing Medical Officer or the British Olympic Association; the list of prohibited drugs is being constantly updated and many GPs will not necessarily know which are banned substances. A full list of banned substances can be found on the WADA website. (www.wada-ama.org)

Medicines

If you take any (permitted) medicines regularly, you must bring adequate supplies together with full written information from your doctor in case of any problems.

What do I do now?

If you wish to take part in the trip.

  1. If you wish to be part of this trip the first thing you must do is confirm this to me by email

  5. Return to me, by first class post,

·         The code of conduct form,

·         If your parents have signed it the consumption of alcohol consent form,

·         A cheque for the cost of the trip

  7. Avoid taking any medicine in the fortnight leading up to a competition.
  8. If you are going to require (permitted) medication during the trip, obtain full written information from your doctor. Present this information to me (Neil Brown) when you first arrive at the Meeting Point together with any Therapeutic Use Exemption Form (TUE). You must then look after it for the weekend.

If you do not wish to take part in this trip.

  1. If you do not wish to fence in this event you must contact me by email immediately to let me know.

The above information about the trip and your preparation for the trip, I hope, gives you a good idea about what will be happening and what we expect of you before and during the trip.

It is all very serious, but none of this is to say that foreign trips are not, or will not be fun. They are an excellent opportunity to travel, meet people and experience life. They are always fun.

Code of Conduct

As a member of British Fencing, I agree that:

1.                   I will accept the authority of the Trip Leader and I will carry out the Trip Leader’s reasonable instructions and intentions to the best of my ability and in the spirit of the sport.  I accept the authority of supervising adults on the trip in the same manner as the Trip Leader and I will behave in a respectful manner towards all such officials.

2.                   I am attending a sporting event or competition, where the aim is to excel at physical activity, and both that my aim is to achieve the best result and my actions and behaviour will mitigate towards that goal.

3.                   I will behave in a manner that will bring credit to British Fencing, my school (as appropriate), my club, my coach and myself.

4.                   I will not conduct myself in a manner prejudicial to or that could compromise good order and normal discipline.

5.                   I will not behave in a manner that could prejudice or compromise the welfare of other people or their property.

6.                   I will set a good example of effort, conduct and behaviour to other people on the trip.

9.                   I will not smoke.

10.                If I infringe any of the rules I may be subject to sanctions laid down by British Fencing.  These sanctions may lead to my parents or guardians being informed of my behaviour, loss of points from a competition or a competition ban or suspension from membership or other sanction as may be applied.
